SWADE Deadlands | Red-Rat-Lers

Hosted by: Shane Jensen

Baby Head Cemetery looms ahead like a wound in the earth. But it’s the sign that stops your breath. Rusted iron, once proud, now sagging under its grotesque crown: dozens of baby doll heads, eyeless, porcelain faces cracked and sun-bleached, strung up by frayed twine swinging slow and gentle, as though rocking in an unseen cradle. And threaded among them—red-painted baby rattles, bright as fresh blood, clattering softly against one another. Tiny, hollow sounds. Click-clack. Click-clack.

They say it started as tribute.
A settler child, stolen by raiders long ago.
Her skull found later, staked high on the hill.
Folks kept adding dolls and rattles over the years—half prayer, half ward—hoping the little ghost might rest.

But standing here now, dust in your mouth and the sun hammering down, it doesn’t feel like mourning.

It feels like bait.

Ranger Josiah “Iron” McCade:
…they call him “Iron” because even broken, he stands. Driven by a blood-forged vow to hunt abominations, he rides alone—silver bullets glinting in firelight—waiting for the next monster to step into his sights.

Pistol Petey:
…born Peter “Petey” McGraw in the dusty boomtown of Junkyard, in the heart of the Great Maze, sometime around 1875—though no one’s rightly sure, on account of his ma dyin’ of the fever and his pa bein’ more ghost story than family man.

Dr. Mateo Ruiz:
…grew up amid the ruins of Spanish missions and the whispers of Mexican glory days. His father, a Tejano ranchero descended from Coahuila y Tejas settlers, spun tales of the federalist era under the 1824 Constitution, when Mexico was a beacon of liberty before Santa Anna’s centralist boot crushed it all.

Dr. Elara “Nullifier” Voss:
…born in 1862 in a mining camp near Shan Fan in the Great Maze. Her father, Heinrich Voss, was a Prussian immigrant engineer obsessed with ghost rock tech; her mother, Mei-Ling Chen, came from a local merchant family. Elara grew up tinkering in her father’s workshop, mastering mathematics and experimental devices by her teens.

Father Elias “Hawk Eye” Thorne: was a firebrand preacher in the Confederate ranks, his silver tongue rallying boys to glory at Gettysburg. But glory turned to nightmare when the earth heaved, spewing forth walkin’ dead that tore his regiment apart. Bullets barely slowed the abominations; Elias survived by clutching his Bible and screaming Psalms till his voice cracked.

“Big Texas” McCready:
…born Etta Mae McCready on a hardscrabble cattle spread outside Amarillo in 1862, the only child of a widowed rancher who raised her more like a hired hand than a daughter. By age twelve she could wrestle a yearling steer to the ground and outlift any drover on the payroll. Folks said she took after her pa’s side—broad-shouldered, barrel-chested, and stubborn as mesquite root.

“Sly” Rix Anderson:
…a smooth-talking faro dealer working the paddle wheelers out of New Orleans. Now he drifts the Weird West from Tombstone to the Great Maze, playing high-stakes poker in dusty saloons, always one step ahead of Pinkertons, vengeful gamblers, and the whispering entities he bargains with.
